Genshin Impact Fanart Illustrator Interview: hayaroB

When I was so frustrated in pulling Ayaka, the piece of “Ayather” fan-art shown below has been so encouraging and brings me glimmer of hope. Though the drawing is not considered as the best piece as said by its illustrator hayaroB, it caught my eyes the most lately. Another remarkable milestone hayaroB had very recently is that the above featured picture of Ayato and Ayaka has attracted over 100K likes in his tweet! His very first 100K! I am so excited to have an interview with him to know more about his humorous creations regarding Genshin Impact.

Q. How long have you been working as an illustrator?

hayaroB: It’s been about 5 years. I first started working as an illustrator on the Korean Webtoon platform. I am helping my mother who works at the academy while doing illustrations and Webtoon related work.

Original conversation in Korean:

Q. How long have you played Genshin Impact? What propelled / motivated you to become an illustrator of Genshin Impact?

hayaroB: I’ve been playing since the first day Genshin Impact launched its service. After reading the story of the game, if I feel the charm of a character, I want to draw a picture of him/her. However, no matter how good the story is, if there is no direction to back it up, you will not be interested in the story and will not read it any more. It is because Genshin always showed great directing, that made me think, “What would it feel like if I draw it?” Compared to other games, I fell in love with Genshin and drew more of it. So naturally, I’ve become an illustrator very focusing on Genshin Impact.

Q. Tell me about your favorite character of Genshin Impact.

hayaroB: Hu Tao is my favorite. I like Hu Tao’s personality and playstyle, so I even picked up her C3 and Homa. Aside from my favorite, the characters I play the most are Yoimiya and Sayu, while the first character I spent Crown of Insight on all 3 talents is Qiqi. I tend to have a crush on characters that other people don’t develop well.

Original conversation in Korean: Hu Tao를 가장 좋아합니다.

Q. What’s your favorite region and/or location in Genshin Impact?

hayaroB: The Chasm. As it is the most recently opened area, there are more memorable things. Due to the nature of the area, when I continue to explore and enter deeper down below the ground, my favorite animation called “Made in Abyss” came to mind. Even though it is considered as one single region, it is packed with many different artistic scenes, themes, and OSTs that make me feel the most adventurous. The main story with Dainsleif was also so good that I played through it without realizing the passage of time.

Original conversation in Korean: The Chasm.

Q. From start to finish, how long does it take for you to create your work?

hayaroB: Even some of the illustrations of the same type may take 3 hours or 2 days, most of the pictures I posted on Twitter and Pixiv are completed within 3 to 5 hours. If I lose the mood in drawing, I bring my attention to to somewhere else, and either don’t draw at all, or draw little by little over two days.

Original conversation in Korean:

Q. Describe and share the best piece of Genshin Impact art you’ve created.

hayaroB: Among the illustrations I drew, I received the most attention with the piece below. This is a drawing that I put the most effort to contain as many different stories as possible in one picture. It is an illustration that I was proud of after completing it, and that many people liked it gave me satisfaction.

Original conversation in Korean:

Q. How do you define success as an illustrator?

hayaroB: I think everyone will have a different opinion. My answer may not be the right answer, and please don’t think that it is the right answer either. Personally, I think that if it is possible for me to live a normal life just by working on illustrations without doing any other side jobs, I have succeeded. If you are an illustrator who is not affiliated with any company, there will be a period in which the income is not constant, and in the worst case, you do not even earn enough for basic living expenses. If you are far from these anxiety factors, it means that you have already been recognized by many people. Those who can make a living with only illustration work are considered successful as illustrators. Regardless of your skills or personality as an illustrator, you have to earn money.

Original conversation in Korean:

Q. Name one of your favourite artists / illustrators.

hayaroB: My favorite is Mr. Hideaki Sorachi, the author of the manga Gintama. I majored in manga and originally debuted as a manga artist, and he is the artist who has been influencing me the most from the old days until now. If I hadn’t seen Gintama’s work, I probably wouldn’t have drawn pictures.

Original conversation in Korean:
