Yes, it’s free to play. Up to this moment, there are no paid story content or missions in the game or extremely challenging story stages that you cannot pass without certain “upgrades” or “enhancements” through monetary investment into the game. On the other hand, there’s a Gacha system in which you can acquire playable characters or weapons through “wishes”. To those who are not familiar with Gacha, it can be regarded as luck draws. You are able to accumulate the required materials to perform wishs (or the “pulls”) by going through the game story quests, or participating in some events with rewards. People with bigger appetite for some limited characters or weapons may want to invest some money in order to make more wishes.
Officially Genshin Impact is an online, open world Action Role Play Game (ARPG). It supports cooperative gaming up to 4 players with minimal level of limitation, e.g. you cannot loot the treasure chests in the host’s world, interact with NPC or proceed with the story quests on behalf of the host.
It is not MMORPG. It is not real time as there’s no synchronized world-clock in the server.

From our personal opinions, as a short answer, it’s still a long way to go until we are close to the end of the story. If you prefer a little bit of explanation, here you are:
According to the developer miHoYo/Hoyoverse’s plan they are releasing one nation in the game every year, we will see all 7 nations revealed in late 2025. The story of the 7th nation Snezhnaya will probably last for around a year or so until late 2026. After that as we are getting close to the truth, we expect to finally be able to have more solid quests or plots around a mysterious, fallen kingdom called Khaenri’ah, and the unknown god(s) and its/her/his/their realm.
Alongside the story outline mentioned, a new region being unlocked absolutely means new maps to explore, new riddles to solve, and of course, a long list of new characters for you to interact with or play in you own teams. On top of the above, there’re tons of side-quests, events (in-game/web/communities/offline) and media content such as soundtracks and videos you can enjoy in between main story quests.
Business-wise, Genshin Impact is truly a cash cow, implying that the game brings in a steady, huge sum of profits to the company. According to many different reports Genshin Impact has been a top-tier earner in gaming category since its day one. miHoYo/Hoyoverse definitely has to continue to bring in their best effort to keep this cash cow milking. Please note clearly that fan-made merchandise definitely are NOT OFFICIAL and are probably sourced from various suppliers. The products are not created or licensed by miHoYo/Hoyoverse but they are legally allowed by the company. For further information please refer to the company’s notice: in English for overseas market or in Chinese for Mainland China market – both articles are more or less similar in general.
In addition, unofficial products are, of course, not quality-assured by miHoYo/Hoyoverse – please do note this if quality is your utmost concern. Due to overwhelming demand of Genshin Impact merchandise, Genshin Impact Official Flagship Store in China itself is the processing bottleneck most of the time. The worst case in our experience was to have some “in stock” products delivered to our warehouse after 6 weeks!
Secondly there are frequently some lockdown policies in place in different parts of China due to COVID. The longest lockdown we have ever encountered was around 1-month long which happened in the region where one of the warehouses of our vendor is located in. In such situation what we can do, unfortunately, is simply to wait for the measure to be lifted. So that is one serious cause of delay.
Furthermore international delivery is sometimes difficult to guarantee with the standard (economical) shipping offered by our humble shop. The flight itself is short but before that the logistics company would schedule your parcel to join the others in a big lot to the same destination country. If you change your mind, you no longer like or need the item, or you find that the clothes do not fit you, you will be not able to ask for a refund. If the time for you to receive the goods is longer than expected, that is also not a reason for a refund because it is never guaranteed. Pre/back-orders cannot be canceled. Any expected delivery dates are tentatively provided by the Official Genshin Impact Flagship shop in China. We are unable to cancel or refund any pre/back-orders for inaccurate estimated arrival dates. We will notify you for any critical changes or updates but your order will remain.
